Last week I posted a blog about Winnipeg not having an official, go-to nickname. We've got a few wannabe or once was or were nicknames in River City, Winterpeg, The Peg, etc.... but nothing that totally works. Toronto recently held a contest/forum in an effort to re-brand their town with a new nickname. They went from the dated Hogtown to the new champ... El Toro. Nobody knows if it will catch on or if it will stick, but I'm sure they had a good time getting there. Since the post... I've received a ton of suggestions on email and via Twitter. I've also received unsolicited support that perhaps the time is right for a new nickname. It has to be done right, so I'll figure out the details and see where this thing can go. In the meantime... here a a few of the suggestions I've received so far to whet your appetite.
As in short for saying "W" in full. There's no question that could work.
I think this might have been inspired by Charlie Sheen, so the shelf life might be short.
Winnie the Peg.
Probably too long for a nickname, but makes sense.
I assume because we're in the middle of the country, not the pack.
It's not new, but it's certainly not dead either.
It might be cool if you know the hotel in Vegas (The Wynn). Not so much if you don't.
I was told this was a Filipino translation of River City.
Poutine is really good, but this nickname would not win a contest.
This was just the start. Stay tuned. And get creative.
