Posted By: Ace Burpee · 2/6/2011 4:37:00 PM
The other day I posted a pizza naming contest for my just created Pizza Hotline dry cured pepperoni, fresh garlic, roasted red peppers, and BOTHWELL Jalapeno Wood Smoked Monterey Jack cheese pizza. The pizza, as soon as it has a name, will be available at Pizza Hotline with $5 from each one sold going to the Children's Hospital Foundation. $500 cash is the reward for naming the pizza... and the response has been more than I expected. Every ten minutes my Blackberry beeps with another e-mail entry. I love reading them. I've had entries from 5 different provinces, and one from Australia... and they just keep coming. Here are some of the, literally, thousands of entries...

"The Spiced Right Children's Hospital Pizza."..............."The Spiced Right", for short.

Delightful Pepperoni and Roasted Red Pepper Explosion.

Why not just name it The Burpee???

Name our pizza. I'll give you $500.

Pizza is awesome. The Children's Hospital Foundation is awesome. Cash is also very awesome. I've just finished what is arguably the greatest "work?" project I've been lucky enough to be a part of in a while. We called it the Pizza Project... or Pizza with a Purpose. We designed a new pizza for the menu at Pizza Hotline. After many taste tests, a process that couldn't be wicked great, we have chosen the ingredients. Now your job, besides ordering it when it launches, is to name it. $500.00 cash for the winning name. Here's what you have to work with and to keep in mind when coming up with your name:

The pizza will be... dry cured pepperoni, fresh garlic, roasted red peppers, and BOTHWELL Jalapeno Wood Smoked Monterey Jack cheese. It's really, really good.

The pizza will is big and will cost only $15, with $5 from each one sold ...

Quebec City vs. Winnipeg. The real debate might be...

The poll on winnipegfreepress.com asks if you agree with the results of an NHL player poll that posed the question "What Canadian city deserves a team?". Over half the players chose Quebec City, while Winnipeg picked up only 25% of the vote. When asked if you agree with the players... a landslide 82% of people answering the Free Press poll said they did not. Here's the thing though, the part that worries me. Players would not be taking anything into account anything other than how it affects them personally when answering such a question. They've been asked their personal opinion, they give their honest answer - as it relates to them. There aren't very many of them who have a real emotional connection to Winnipeg, nor would they be following the news in Winnipeg OR Quebec City about which place has their ducks in row or perhaps just has potential. Tax payer dollars funding ...

Oprah's birthday: My favourite talk shows of all time.

Posted By: Ace Burpee · 1/29/2011 1:02:00 AM

Today is Oprah Winfrey's birthday. I think she's just shy of 60. I doubt there is anyone in the same league as Oprah in terms of talk show success, but it doesn't mean she ranks in my top 5 TV talk shows of all time. For some reason I've never really gotten into the popular talk shows. I'm aware of them all, but they mean little to me. I've watched Letterman, Leno, Dr. Phil, Conan, Larry King, Ellen... all with general indifference. I would never make a point of tuning in. If it's on, it's on. If it's not, it's not. It doesn't affect me either way. I have though, at various times in my life, made a point of tuning into certain TV talk shows, none of which I have a feeling will go down in history as the greatest ever. So, on Oprah's birthday... here are my all-time top five favourite TV talk shows:

 1) The Dini...

5 down. 95 to go. 340 days left.

Posted By: Ace Burpee · 1/24/2011 12:55:00 PM
I didn't make any New Years "resolutions" per se. I prefer to set goals. One of the goals I set was to read 100 books this year. It sounded like a solid idea, but it's becoming clear I'm up against it. I need to average over 8 books per month, and with one week left in January... it looks like I'll have 5 done. This in a month that has seen more days that lend themselves to reading than to going outside or, well, anything. Here's why I chose 100 books though. When I was in elementary school, we had a super cool principal named Mr. Reid. He put out the challenge to all of us to try and read 100 books. If we did, we would receive the title of "Eager Beaver". Never has there been better incentive for anything. I would have done anything to be named an ...
