The real black and yellow...

The Canada Winter Games begin Friday in Halifax and Manitoba is well represented with some amazing athletes.  I had the privilege of hanging out with the Manitoba Ringette team over the weekend.  These women started try outs for the team in 2009 and since the team was announced last May-long weekend they’ve played in BC, Alberta, Ontario and hosted a tournament in Steinbach.  These women have been playing ringette for as long as 16 years and give back by mentoring and coaching.  Team Toba will be wearing black and yellow Saturday in their first game against Alberta.  Good Luck to our ladies in the fastest game on ice!

What mom made for dinner last night is worth $250,000.00!

What’s your mom’s classic dish?  That one recipe in your family that’s been passed down for generations, something that only your mom or dad or grandma, or aunt knows how to make and they do it better than anyone else in the world?  That tasty piece of family cuisine could be worth $250,000 and could even appear as a President’s Choice food item.

A new reality show will air on Food Network Canada this fall called Recipe to Riches where dishes in 7 different categories will be judged and the best in each category will become a new President’s Choice product and win $25,000.  The final episode will have the country vote for their favorite and win the Grand Prize of $250,00.00.

Someone from Manitoba could easily win this.

Auditions start the beginning of February so .  Good Luck!

Wear the West End raises $8,500 and counting!

This past summer, Ace Burpee teamed up with jewelry designer Hilary Druxman and created a stunning necklace in support of Winnipeg’s West End. Proceeds from the sale of each piece were designated to two very worthy west end organizations - the West Central Women’s Resource Centre & the Spence Neighbourhood Association.

This week, we were proud to present both groups with a cheque for $8,500!

Thanks to on-going demand, the campign will continue and the Wear the West End necklace is still on sale at Hilary Druxman (258 McDermot Avenue) for just $36. The necklace is also available at www.hilarydruxman.com

A special thank you to our friends at Moksha Yoga for their generous support of this campaign.

Kristos Razdayetsya!

Last night as well as tonight, Ukrainians will gather with family and friends to celebrate Christmas under the Julian calendar. Ukrainian Christmas is not so much about gifts as it is about time to come together with family.  It includes Sviata Vechera and Midnight Mass, St. Nicholas and carolers, the blessing of holy water and the home. The Didukh, beautiful embroidered tablecloths, kolach, the star of Bethlehem, and the Yalynka are all symbols of the holiday.

One of my favorite places to visit is Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural Centre on Alexander Ave. It was created to house a museum, archives, library and art gallery.  It is the largest Ukrainian cultural institution of it’s kind.  It also houses a beautiful boutique.  Should you need or want anything from traditional clothing to jewelry to cookbooks and even borscht, you can find it here.

Should you be looking for an activity for the kids ...
