The Merkel Family

Jacob Merkel died saving his son Kai's life, rescuing the 13-year-old from the family's home as it was engulfed in a raging fire outside the Steinbach-area town of La Broquerie.

His son remains in the Health Sciences Centre in critical condition. The 36-year-old long-distance trucker rushed into his burning home to ensure his wife and their four children got out. Merkel's wife and their three younger children were not injured.

HOT 103 is working to raise as much money as possible to help the family through this difficult time.

The Dubois Family

Five Winnipeg boys were orphaned after a crash on a highway in eastern Saskatchewan which sent four of them to hospital, two of them with serious injuries.

Marcel and Brenda Dubois, both 38, were pronounced dead at the scene after a westbound car collided with their eastbound minivan while attempting to pass another vehicle on Hwy 16, near the community of Saltcoats. Two sons, a 15-year-old and a 13-year-old, were airlifted to a Regina hospital in critical condition. Two others, a 16-year-old and a nine-year-old, were taken to a Yorkton hospital for treatment. A fifth son, 19, did not make the trip and stayed behind in Winnipeg.
